چکیده
above-ground biomass and a 20-fold increase in plant cover by Artemesia frigida, a common shrubby plant of some North American and Asian grasslands. This carbon dioxide induced enhancement of plant growth, among the highest so far reported, provides evidence from a native grassland that rising carbon dioxide levels since the onset of industrial times may have been contributing to the observed shrubland expansions over the past 200 years. “Encroachment of shrubs into grasslands is an important problem facing rangeland managers and ranchers; this process replaces grasses, the preferred forage of domestic livestock, with species that are unsuitable for domestic grazing,” the authors conclude. And ecologists have little to cheer too. This species is considered one of the least desirable for wildlife, used only occasionally by pronghorn and elk. It is known only to be an important food source for sage grouse. The researchers, working on the western edge of the Great Plains, believe more work is now needed to see whether other parts of these grasslands may be susceptible to similar changes. Just the Fax - Differentiating Voice and Fax Phone Lines Using Call Billing Data
We consider the problem of classifying a telephone line as either a voice or fax telephone line based on its long-distance calling patterns (i.e., the time of day and duration of its long distance calls) and based on knowledge about other lines with which calls are placed. We show that both kinds of information are important. In particular, neither choosing new learning algorithms nor collectin...
متن کاملCompetition and Price Dispersion in International Long Distance Calling
This paper examines the relationship between changes in telecommunications provider competition on international long distance routes and changes in prices on those routes. Overall, increased competition is associated with significantly lower prices to consumers of long distance services. However, the relationship between competition and price varies according to the type of long distance plan ...
متن کاملLong-distance calls in Neotropical primates.
Long-distance calls are widespread among primates. Several studies concentrate on such calls in just one or in few species, while few studies have treated more general trends within the order. The common features that usually characterize these vocalizations are related to long-distance propagation of sounds. The proposed functions of primate long-distance calls can be divided into extragroup a...
متن کاملThe communicative content of the common marmoset phee call during antiphonal calling.
Vocalizations are a dominant means of communication for numerous species, including nonhuman primates. These acoustic signals are encoded with a rich array of information available to signal receivers that can be used to guide species-typical behaviors. In this study, we examined the communicative content of common marmoset phee calls, the species-typical long distance contact call, during anti...
متن کاملIn situ quantitation of the spatial scale of calling distances and population density-independent N-acylhomoserine lactone-mediated communication by rhizobacteria colonized on plant roots.
We used computer-assisted microscopy at single cell resolution to quantify the in situ spatial scale of N-acylhomoserine lactone (AHL)-mediated cell-to-cell communication of Pseudomonas putida colonized on tomato and wheat root surfaces. The results of this in situ quantification study on close-to-natural surfaces challenge the conventional view of a quorum group requirement of high cell densit...
